Theme nights on cruise ships have been updated for the modern era with many mirroring what is happening in super clubs around the world. From Mexican fiestas to Gatsby-themed get-togethers, the new dress codes put the emphasis on inclusivity. Here are five of the best themed nights on cruise lines around the world.

P&O Cruises

Shrug off the cardigan but keep the sensible shoes as P&O has rolled out four new party concepts across its fleet. As well as the Vegas afternoon parties the cruise line has launched Bianco, the White Party, plus a retro Back-to-School party and a Gatsby-themed evening where dressing up from the roaring ’20s creates a visual feast. The new Bianco night has become a cruise highlight as the top deck is hit by a blizzard of white smoke, white cocktails and passengers wearing neon-bright grins. Party animals take note.

Carnival Cruises

Get ready for some body-rocking aboard Carnival Spirit, which morphs into a floating fun-fest for its casual-themed parties, including Mexican nights and a Caribbean Beach Party. The RedFrog Rum Bar, which opened after a multimillion-dollar refurb in August, woos guests with rum-based cocktails as well as Carnival’s bespoke beer, the Thirsty Frog Summer Ale. All the action takes place on deck near the poolside bar where the party vibe is as chillaxed as the passengers wearing leis and loud shirts.

Royal Caribbean International

Forget Dancing with the Stars. Think Dancing Under the Stars as the night sky becomes your ceiling for a themed party where guests gather as the sun goes down. Another popular onboard party is the Family Disco Night, which gives Dad the green light to bust out his breakdancing moves. There are also itinerary-specific parties such as the Caribbean Night and Toga Night, as well as ’70s- or ’80s-themed parties. Cruising newbies are encouraged to let their hair down from the get-go with the Sail-Away Party.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Expect a lot of doof on the top deck of the Norwegian Getaway for the Glow Party, which has injected a whole heap of cool onboard Norwegian Cruise Line ships. Guests are encouraged to wear anything white or bright to the all-ages glow party as the top deck is festooned with fluoro lights and decked out like an upscale beach club with sky dancers and face-painting fun. Arrive early in the evening to enjoy a few innovative cocktails and, when the pace picks up, get your glow stick groove on for a photo with the ship’s captain.

Groove Cruise

Cruise party veterans and electric dance music obsessives have probably heard of the Groove Cruise, which is about as decadent as an onboard dance party gets. There is nothing mellow about this floating fiesta, which takes place over 96 hours and attracts a loyal following of dance music fanatics who favour underground sounds. The dance party has been grinding out house music for 11 years now and is just the ticket for the clubbing crowd who want to party through the night and then stay glued to a sunlounge all day. New in 2016, GC Miami will sail to Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Get onboard.
