Travelling solo? There are many reasons a river cruise makes for a great holiday choice. The stresses of organising a trip are left to other people and itineraries are flexible enough to enjoy group tours and your own downtime. Given the small scale of river-cruise ships, it’s easy to be socialise with others should you want to, whether in the lounge or in the restaurant, where open seating is encouraged.

Unfortunately single cabins are rare on river-cruise ships, so it’s best to book early before the supply runs out. If you book a regular double cabin you may have to pay the annoying single supplement. However, river-cruise companies are increasingly waiving or reducing such fees, depending on the time of year, particular cruise and cabin category.

Keep an eye out for ongoing special offers which could provide substantial savings. Here are five cruise charmers we think are perfect for solo river cruisers in 2016.

APT – Magnificent Europe

This classic Amsterdam-Budapest run takes you through the heartland of Europe, visiting the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. At 15 days it provides time to get to know fellow passengers, and enjoy your independent adventures, too. Gorgeous scenery includes the dramatic Rhine Gorges and vineyard-draped Wachau Valley. Solo travellers can avoid the single supplement in all cabin categories on certain departure dates in March and October-December 2016.

Scenic – Jewels of Europe

Following the same route between Amsterdam and Budapest, this 15-day cruise is another journey through the wonderful contrasts of Europe, from big cities like Vienna to small towns such as gorgeous Regensburg and vineyard villages like Rüdesheim. Solo travellers won’t pay the single supplement in any cabin category on departures during March-April and October-December 2016 – and the discount applies to some other European cruises, too.

Uniworld – Paris & Normandy

The Seine River in northern France provides a tranquil and scenic float on this eight-day cruise that takes in iconic sights such as Monet’s gardens and lily ponds at Giverny, the D-Day beaches of Normandy and, of course, the delights (and gourmet food) of Paris. The single supplement is waived on a number of departures between March and July in 2016.

APT Cruising – Rhine, Rhône and Moselle

Few trips are finer than one traversing the whole of Europe from North Sea to the Mediterranean, and that’s exactly what you can do on this 21-day journey that links two classic river cruises with a land trip across Switzerland. Solo travellers can avoid the single supplement in all cabin categories on some departure dates in March-April and October-December 2016.

Uniworld – Bordeaux, Vineyards & Châteaux

If you’re looking for fine French wine and food, coupled with the extravagant history and gentle scenery of southwest France, then this eight-day round trip from Bordeaux is mouth-watering – and surely there’s no better place to get to socialise with newfound friends than at a wine-tasting. The single supplement is waived on a number of departures between March and August in 2016.
